There are plenty of stories on the internet about how easy it is to make insane amounts of money on Apple’s iAd. This post is meant as a dose of reality… at least as I’ve experienced it.
Things started well enough. For the first couple of weeks, I was seeing eCPMs of $3 to $5. This was mostly due to the two “premium” ads my users were seeing: The Nissan Leaf and NFL Direct TV ads. Each of these ads pay $.01 per impression and $1.60 per click. Then around 9/30, the below graph happened:
Further examination of the numbers would reveal that around 9/30, I stopped getting the Nissan and DirectTV ads. What caused this? The Click Through Rates (see below) were stable. The ad requests were stable. Was it an end of the quarter thing?
Apple responded to my query, but the answer was generic (there are lots of factors, we’re working on optimizing things, be patient…) . Has anyone else seen something like this?
One more interesting note: my fill rates have been decent, with the exception of a dip right after an update went live in the app store.
Hopefully the eCPM issue will work itself out, like the fill rate dip did. In the meantime, I’m looking at incorporating Admob and/or Greystripe as my backup ad provider.
